A laser is a source of monochromatic coherent radiation with a high-directivity light beam (from the English "LASER"  - Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation).

An optical quantum generator is a device that converts pumping energy (electrical, chemical, light, heat) into monochromatic, coherent, polarized and narrowly directed radiation flux.

Classification of lasers is fulfilled according to:
  • The pumping method (the method of creating an inverse population) - optical, chemical, excitation by electron impact, etc .;
  • The type of operation medium - glass, liquids, gases, crystals, semiconductors and others;
  • Type of resonator;
  • Operating mode - continuous or pulsed;

These differences are determined by  the practical application of radiation sources.
